We were in Palma de Mallorca as Erasmus students at Education In Progress SPAIN, thanks to our school VET project "Vision of the Future".
During our stay, we had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the Inspiring Mallorca program, a journey designed to boost creativity, connect with nature, and explore culture in a truly immersive way.
In our case, as visual merchandisers, we were expected to awaken our creativity as an essential skill for creating compelling visual displays.
Our adventure began in Valldemossa with Karin, a charming village tucked into the Serra de Tramuntana (UNESCO Heritage). Stepping into the historic Real Cartuja de Valldemossa, once home to Frédéric Chopin and George Sand, we felt transported through time. The monastery’s serene halls and sunlit courtyards sparked a deep appreciation for how surroundings can inspire the soul. Learning about Chopin’s famous “Raindrop Prelude” together with “A winter in Mallorca” written by Geroge Sand. composed during his winter stay, reminded us how even the harshest conditions of nature – cold winds, storms, and solitude – can awaken extraordinary creativity.
Then we explored Palma, the vibrant capital of Mallorca: it was equally enchanting. The city itself felt alive, inspired by the legacy of Robert Graves, who found his muse on this island. Walking through Palma’s streets, we were captivated by the towering Cathedral of La Seu, its soaring Gothic architecture a testament to human imagination reaching for the skies. Everywhere we turned, music floated through the air: street performers, guitarists, and singers transformed everyday streets into stages, making us feel as though we were living in a fairy tale, where history, art, and daily-life intertwine in perfect harmony.
Another magical part of our experience was cycling along the marvellous Paseo Marítimo, Palma’s sun-kissed seafront promenade. As we pedaled past the harbor and the shimmering Mediterranean, the rhythm of the waves carried us to an isolated beach, a perfect sanctuary where we could pause, breathe, and reflect. There, we practiced mindfulness, letting the sea, sun, and wind guide our thoughts and awaken inspiration. In that moment, we realized how deeply natural elements can nourish creativity, focus, and inner peace.
During the experience, we were invited to explore Mallorca through poetry and art. We learned to slow down and feel the sounds, colors, and atmosphere around us, letting our senses guide our observations, while writing our poetries.
We tell you about our experience through this video:
Once our poetries were complete, we worked with David and Miri to bring it to life: we recorded our poems, adding different sounds, effects, and our voices to create immersive audio pieces; with Miri, we transformed our poetry into art on tote bags, using paint, colors, and brushes to visually express the words we had written.
Inspiring Mallorca strengthened our ability to see, feel, and interpret our environment creatively through mindful exercises on the beach and cycling along the Paseo Marítimo. Listening to the rhythm of the sea, feeling the gentle breeze, and observing the vibrant colors of Mallorca sharpened our sensory awareness, helping us notice subtle details such as light, textures, and spatial flow. Our writing creativity was inspired at every stage: this process taught us how to express emotions visually and conceptually, mirroring the work of a visual merchandiser, where displays are designed to evoke feelings, tell a story, and engage the audience.
Exploring Valldemossa’s historic streets, Palma’s architecture, and Mallorca’s landscapes encouraged us to think outside the box and experiment with materials, colors, and forms. Drawing inspiration from our surroundings, whether the natural scenery can be reflected in our professional job as visual merchandisers.
